James Abbe

Time Period: 1917-1940
Location: 15 West 67th St., Corner of Broadway & 47th Street, Manhattan NY

“Abbe's theatrical work was one of three photographic specialties he cultivated during his career. He also became an expert movie still photographer in 1920 and an important photojournalist in the 1930s. Brought to NY by magazine publishers interested in his experiments for using photographs as illustrations for narratives, Abbe won overnight renown in 1919 for his stage portraits of performers in costume. Enhancing the available stage lighting with a battery of portable lamps, he made intensely vivid images suggestive of interrupted stories. Until 1923 it was rare to attend a serious theatrical performance in New York without character portraits printed on unusual papers on display in the lobby. He did contract work with magazines, and after 1920 with film companies.”

In the book Dorothy and Lillian Gish by Lillian Gish, this picture comes at the very end of the year 1919, but is without a date. It is atrributed to Abbe, though. Kathie

There is much about Ms. Namara in P.G. Wodehouse and Guy Bolton's "Bring on the Girls". Really good reading about the teens and twenties on Broadway, and their collaborations along with Jerome Kern. Kathie

There is a very large copy of this photo in Kevin Brownlow's book, "Hollywood The Pioneers." The caption begins, "'I wear twenty-eight costumes,' said Betty Blythe, of her part as The Queen of Sheba,' and if I put them on all at once I couldn't keep warm."'
